These guards are going to be "instead of" a pipe guard, radiator guard and engine guard. It is also claimed to protect my foot in a tip over where the bike is resting on my foot. It prevents the foot from becoming trapped between the engine case and the ground. These also have the benefit of carrying a small bag on each of the guards. I'll have them so I cam remove the small bags when I go off road in tight single track. Though they make the bike about 2"wider, on each side, they are worth it. This is one item that is function over form.
